The American Legion was chartered by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic, mutual-help, wartime veteran's organization. It is a community-service organization, which now numbers approximately 3 million men and women members in nearly 15,000 American Legion Posts worldwide.
Herbert Williams American Legion Post 202 received its charter on August 20, 1922. The Post is named after Herbert Williams. He was a Missouri National Guardsman who was killed in action September 30, 1918, while rushing a machine gun nest. He was a member of the 139th Infantry Regiment that was involved in the battle of the Argonne Offensive. This offensive was the greatest American battle of WW I. In six weeks, 26,277 soldiers were killed and 95,786 wounded.
Post 202 has more than 500 members. The American Legion Auxiliary Unit 202 is part of the Post’s family. Together, we organize and hold fund-raising functions to provide sponsorship and support for numerous civic, veteran and non-veteran groups.
Post 202 rents our facility as both a community service and a source of income for the Post’s many veteran support programs.
